Luke Thompson, from Zackery, Louisiana, has fronted his own bluegrass band since 1953. A veteran of the Louisiana Hayride, he began promoting country and bluegrass shows in the 1960s. In 1968, with the help of Bill Monroe, Luke started the first bluegrass festival in the state of Louisiana. He is also well known for his mandolin and guitar building, having created instruments for the likes of Mark O'Connor, Buck White, and others.

In the 1960s, Luke purchased a large format camera and began documenting some of the musicians and bands that came to play in the state of Louisiana. Luke took his camera to Nashville and Bean Blossom, Indiana as well as a number of other venues where good country and bluegrass music was played.

The following photographs represent a small sampling of Luke's total collection.

Many thanks to Luke Thompson for allowing me to post these great photographs on the site, and thanks to Dennis Satterlee for making the arrangements.
