As a fan, I've always been intrigued by the Flatt & Scruggs song books. I was first exposed to this music in the mid-1970's, and can remember hearing about the books, but it would be years before I actually saw one. Over the past few years, as my collection of photographs and posters grew, I finally got my hands on some of the fabled song books.

With a few books in my collection, I became even more curious about how many more books existed, and when they were printed.

As far as I can tell, there are 19 Flatt & Scruggs song books, not counting reprints or variations such as different colored covers. All 19 books, plus some reprints and other related materials, are included here. This is still a work in progress, so if you have any information that will be helpful, please let me know.

Some of the books shown here are in my personal collection, but many of them, and much of the information, came from other collectors. Most of the credit goes to Frank Godbey, Ken Landreth and Jerry Keys who have provided countless scans, the chronology, and lots of great facts. Thank you, guys! Thanks to all who have helped out.

Many of the song books, especially the earlier ones, are closely associated with the radio station where the band was working at the time.

Click the radio for a brief history of radio stations where Flatt & Scruggs performed.

Bill Monroe's WSM Grand Ole Opry Song Folio No. 1

While not technically a Flatt & Scruggs song book, they're in it, so it's being included here. This book has been reprinted. First editions have no price, and have also been seen with 50 cent stickers. Second editions have the same cover, but with $1.00 price. Later reprints have a price of $2.95, and the picture is brown.

Another book very similar to this one, Bill Monroe's WSM Grand Ole Opry Song Folio No. 2, has the same pictures but fewer songs as No. 1.

No. 1 is dated 1947, and No. 2 is 1952. The songs are written out in standard notation, along with the words.

1948. 6" x 8.5", 20 pages, 23 songs, with full page pictures of Lester, Earl, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Shumate, and Cedric Rainwater. Cover is brown/orange.

Foggy Mountain Boys No.1 Edition of Radio Favorites

This is the first Flatt & Scruggs song book. About half of the pictures in the book have microphones labeled WHKY (Hickory, NC), but the call letters are blacked-out in the remaining pictures. Although the band worked out of WHKY for just a few weeks before moving to WCYB (Bristol, VA), it has been confirmed that book was available while they were at WHKY.

The printing looks like a crude letterpress and some pages are printed crooked. It is stapled on the long edge, so the cover is formatted in landscape, but the contents are in portrait format. There is no return address on the book.

SWEETHEART YOU DONE ME WRONG / I'LL NEVER SHED ANOTHER TEAR / FORGIVE ME / MOTHER'S ONLY SLEEPING / TIME ALONE WILL NEVER TELL / LET ME SHARE MY MOMMY DEAR WITH YOU / SOLD DOWN THE RIVER / SOME OLD DAY / HONEYSUCLKE ROSE / I'LL BE GOING TO HEAVEN SOME DAY / NO MOTHER IN THE WORLD / I HEARD MY MOTHER CALL MY NAME IN PRAYER / WHO'S THAT MAN I SAW YOU WITH / GOD LOVES HIS CHILDREN / IF I SHOULD WANDER BACK TONIGHT / LITTLE CABIN HOME ON THE HILL / WE'LL MEET AGAIN SWEETHEART / CHURCH UPON THE HILL OF CLAY / HE'S WAITING THERE / REMEMBER THE CROSS ON WHICH JESUS DIED / WILL YOU BE LOVIN' ANOTHER MAN / I'M GOIN' TO MAKE HEAVEN MY HOME / BROTHER I'M GETTING READY TO GO

1949. 6" x 9", 14 pages, 6 pictures, 21 songs, with a blue cover.

Foggy Mountain Boys No. 2 Edition of Radio Favorites

Although there is no return address on this book, all of the photographs have WCYB (Bristol, VA) microphones, and one picture shows them standing next to a touring car with "WCYB-Radio" on the door.

SUNNY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN / SOME OF THESE DAYS YOUR'RE GONNA' BE SAD / OLD COUNTRY CHURCH / DECORATION DAY IN HEAVEN / SO HAPPY I'LL BE / CAMPING IN CANAAN / DON'T THIS ROAD LOOK ROUGH AND ROCKY / I'M DYING A SINNER'S DEATH / DARLIN' IS IT TOO LATE NOW / A HUNDRED YEARS FORM NOW / WHY DO YOU TREAT ME THIS WAY / YOU CAUSED IT ALL BY TELLING LIES / EVERYONE KNEW IT BUT ME / YOU'RE THE RAINBOW IN MY DREAMS / CABIN IN CAROLINA / WHY DID YOU WANDER / BABY BLUE EYES / WHERE THE OLD RED RIVER FLOWS / WHEN YOU ARE LONELY / WHEN HE REACHED DOWN HIS HAND FOR ME

1949. 6" x 9", 12 pages, with 3 full page pictures. 14 songs. Cover is blue.

Foggy Mountain Boys Number Three Edition of Radio Favorites

This is another book with no return address, but it was printed while the band was at radio station WROL in Knoxville, TN.

Kentucky Mountain Barn Dance Song Book

This is another book that is not technically a Flatt & Scruggs book, but they are included in it.

The Kentucky Mountain Barn Dance was broadcast over WKLX in Lexington, KY. F&S worked out of the Lexington/Versailles area from about the fall of 1949 to the spring of 1950.

This book includes two songs attributed to F&S.

Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys
1950 Edition of Radio Favorites

The picture inside this book has a WROL microphone, but it is likely that the band had moved on from WROL by the time they were selling this book. At least one copy is known to have a return address of WVLK, Versailles, KY.

This is the first songbook that shows Earl playing the Granada after he traded banjos with Don Reno.

The original copy shown here has a blue cover, but others have buff-colored covers. Reprints of this book were made by the Beacon Banjo Company around 1964, when Earl Scruggs was affiliated with the company. Beacon reprinted three F&S song books at that time. My reprint copy has a pink cover.

Interestingly, another version of this same book has a golden-colored cover and is titled No. Four Edition of Radio Favorites. Contents are identical.

The book contains no text other than song lyrics, and just one full-page photo.

I'M WAITING TO HEAR YOU CALL ME DARLING / YOU'RE A MEAN, MEAN MAMA / THAT LITTLE OLD COUNTRY CHURCH HOUSE / COME BACK DARLING / I'M HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE / NO MOTHER OR DAD / MY LITTLE GIRL IN TENNESSEE / HER LITTLE BROWN HAND / REUNION IN HEAVEN / YOU'RE DRIFTING AWAY / GOD SENT MY LITTLE GIRL / THE LITTLE WHITE CHURCH / THE OLD HOME TOWN / WHEN GOD DIPS HIS LOVE IN MY HEART / HE TOOK YOUR PLACE / I'LL NEVER LOVE ANOTHER

Excerpt: The Flatt and Scruggs show is one of the few Hillbilly acts to have had the opportunity to work on Broadway in New York City. Last fall the Flatt and Scruggs show was a big hit while there for a two weeks engagement with the "Hayride". Click the songbook to check out the Playbill.

This book includes much more text with each photograph than most previous songbooks, including biographical information about Lester, Earl and band mates.
